Strong winds buffeted Southern California last night and this morning causing wide spread damage. Fallen trees, downed power lines, etc. Sustained winds at my station were 30 mph with gusts as high as 42 mph. Combined with extremely low humidity, these conditions have prompted a Red Flag Fire Alert. These palm trees were all leaning to the South as the winds roared out of the North.

A great thunderstorm was blowing through my town. I went into the backyard and started taking time exposures with my Olympus Digital Camera. I was lucky to capture this nice bolt.

Cumulonimbus2567 viewsI was flying back from Boston and got a chance to see some spectacular weather from the air. We were heading West over Arizona and the hot afternoon Sun was creating some beautiful Cumulonimbus clouds. We were flying at approximately 32,000 Feet and the Thermal Convection was driving these clouds well above us. Taken July 23, 2007.

Me And My Shadow2510 views5/27/05
Taken from about 22,000 feet, flying from Oakland to Burbank, I saw this lone cloud above the Frazier Park area Northwest of Los Angeles. The shadow from the cloud can be seen on the ground below. I had someone tell me the cloud looked like a buffalo lying on it s side.

Several storms out in the Pacific were beginning to affect Northern California with heavy rain. These same storms were causing heavy surf all along the coast. A large west-northwest swell continued to affect the outer coastal waters of Southern California today. Breakers of 8 to 12 feet, with locally higher sets, pounded the coastline. In thid photo, Los Angeles City Fire Dept Bulldozers build a burm of sand to protect the businesses and residences along Venice Beach.

The Crawling Eye2359 viewsDoes anybody remember the old movie "The Crawling Eye" ? Or did I just embarrass myself ? The fog here is rolling over the Verdugo Hills and into the La Canada / La Crescenta Valley. It looks as though it is heading straight towards Jet Propulsion Laboratory located in the lower right of the photo.

Sundown Dunes2612 viewsThe setting Sun was casting an orange hue on the Sand Dunes at Dumont. Dumont is located 30 miles North of Baker CA near the Southern tip of Death Valley. It was a windy day and the winds in the upper atmosphere were affecting the clouds. I m not sure I would classify this cloud as Lenticular but it was getting close. Taken 3/25/06.

Exploding Cloud2571 viewsAnother cloud formed by strong upward convection in unstable air. In this photo taken at Lake Havasu, the nearly explosive vertical development of this cloud was awesome.
