Waimea Canyon2195 viewsWaimea Canyon, also known as the Grand canyon of the Pacific, is approximately ten miles long and up to 3,000 feet deep. The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River which is fed from the extreme rainfall on the island's central peak, Mount Waiʻaleʻale. Mount Waiʻaleʻale is among the wettest places on earth.

Hawaiian Monk Seal 22171 viewsThe Hawaiian monk seal is among the most endangered of all seal species. The population of Hawaiian monk seals is in decline. In 2008, it was estimated that only 1200 individuals remain. This Monk Seal was seen on Poipu Beach. He looks very content, enjoying the warm Spring Sun.

Another Day Another Bear 7-23-20181644 viewsThis Bear has been on the street several times the last few days. He was leisurely enjoying some fresh oranges off of our neighbors tree. Didn't seem to be bothered by us at all and likewise it didn't bother us.

He has a Yellow Tag in his ear. Might be Bear #515. I'm trying to find out more about him from Fish and Wildlife.

Hey Boo Boo. There's a picnic on Hollyslope Road1564 viewsMeet Bear #513. According to the Department of Fish and Wildlife its a young female that tagged in Monrovia in May of 2017. They estimated her weight then at 200 pounds. She was pretty calm and wasn't bothered by me taking pictures of her. I used a telephoto lens of course. UPDATE This might actually be Bear #515.

A Bird In The Hand . . . 1232 viewsThanks for the heads up from Altadena WeatherCam viewers Mario & Brenda Miralles. This Black Phoebe stopped by to visit Mr. Bill this morning. I’ve seen them searching for flies around the yard (which they are good at). I didn’t know they liked to hang out with Mr. Bill also.
