Located on the Northeast side of the Big Island of Hawai’i, the Waipi’o Valley is a plush green area of the island that receives annual rainfall of over 200 inches per year. Access to the Valley Floor was over an exciting 4WD Road with a 25% Grade that drops almost 1000 feet in about a mile. It was well worth renting the Jeep Cherokee at the airport. Once at the bottom you are treated to a beautiful mile long Black Sand Beach.

Lowe Fire 21929 viewsA small brush fire in Altadena, CA yesterday was brought under control quickly by Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Fire Crews. The "LOWE" fire was fought primarily from the air with the support of Camp Crews.
In this photo a Helicopter makes a water drop right over a Camp Crew working the fire below.

Mauna Loa1910 viewsTaken 4/6/06
Rising gradually to approximately 13,679 feet above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet. This enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawai`i and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Mauna Loa is among Earth’s most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since its first well-documented historical eruption in 1843. Its most recent eruption was in 1984. This photo was taken from the 13, 796 foot Summit of Mauna Kea.

Kilauea is the world’s most active volcano. Once thought to be part of the Mauna Loa Volcano, it is now known to be a separate unique volcano. All the current activity on Kilauea is at the Pu’u O’o Vent. Lava flows from Pu’u O’o Vent into the ocean. This photo was taken at approximately 6:53 p.m. from a distance of about 2 miles. The red glow of molten lava can be seen as it flows into the ocean creating tall plumes of steam.

Is That You Woody ?1906 viewsA rare sight in my neck of the woods, this Woodpecker was enjoying the warm Autumn Afternoon in the White Birch Tree in my front yard. Partly cloudy skies and a high of 70.9 degrees at my Weather Station in Altadena, CA made for a wonderful day.

A beautiful warm evening here in the Los Angeles area. 95 degrees at my station in Altadena today. I spent the evening in the back yard to watch a visible pass of the International Space Station (ISS) and took some photos of the evening sky. The brightest object is Venus, the "Evening Star". Moving 45 degrees from Venus to the upper left you see Mars and then Saturn. A beautiful alignment of three of the visible planets.

While Weather Photography is an ongoing quest, I occasionally get off on tangents and focus on other subjects. Current Project: Humming Birds. Boy, are these guys tough to catch! The Mexican Sage (Salvia Leucantha) in my yard really attracts Humming Birds.
